Abstract:
The intent of the present study was to examine the influence of attention on the relationship between speed of information processing and cognitive ability. Specifically, it was hypothesized that, aside from differences in age, attention would account for a greater proportion of variance in cognition scores than speed of information processing. Subjects included twenty-four second grade, twenty-five fifth grade, and twenty-five eighth grade students from a local Catholic school and twenty-three first year college students from Loyola College of Maryland. Results confirmed the hypothesis, indicating that attention accounted for a significant amount of variance in cognitive ability, while speed of information processing did not. The significance of these results and implications for future research were discussed.
