Abstract:
This study researches the determinants of participation in the Roman Catholic parishes of the Urban Vicariate of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The literature review is divided into three parts. The first part is a review of the historical literature of the role of the laity in the Roman Catholic tradition. The laity has had a minor role until the Twentieth Century and Vatican Council II. The second part is a review of contemporary theological literature. At present the search is for an understanding of the role of the laity in the Church today. The third part is a review of contemporary research. There is very little being done in the way of research about the laity, although there is some work in the area of parish research. This study is based on a current study in the Archdiocese of Baltimore of its Urban parishes. This study defines participation with four dependent variables: Active, Leadership, Volunteer hours, and Attendance. The independent variables are six parish specific variables of Membership, Attendance, Impact, Pastor, Community, and Outreach, and five demographic variables of Sex, Race, Age, Education, and Marital Status. Eleven Hypotheses are tested using univariate and multivariate analyses. The results of the study show a strong relationship between participation and the parish specific variables and a less strong relationship with the demographic variables. This study concludes with the development of a pastoral plan for increasing membership based on the findings of this study.
