Abstract: The life and writings of St. Ignatius of Loyola have led to the establishment of thousands of institutions focused on doing God's work. They are guided by the various methods and practices promoted by The Society of Jesus and are formed by Jesuit priests and laypeople alike. The Spiritual Exercises specifically has influenced the formation of retreats for not only those seeking the priesthood but also various groups such as high school and college students. One retreat in particular, Kairos, is a popular structure used in schools and is currently the retreat offered for juniors and seniors at Loyola Blakefield in Towson, Maryland. This thesis addresses the topics of sin and repentance in the life and writings of St. Ignatius, specifically the First Week of the Spiritual Exercises. Its goal is to describe Ignatius' experience of sin and repentance in light of the Biblical notions of sin manifest both in his life and in his writings. It argues that Ignatius' notions of sin and repentance are necessary for the application of Ignatian values, especially in modern retreats. The first chapter discusses sin and repentance in the life of Ignatius and the second explores their presence in the First Week of the Spiritual Exercises. This thesis concludes with a third chapter proposing that the Exercises promote three virtues: the disposal of oneself to be helped, generosity with self and with God, and abandonment.
