Abstract:
Research has indicated that students with traumatic brain injury (TBI) have cognitive-linguistic deficits that would be best assessed and treated through a classroom-based service delivery model. Unfortunately, there is a lack of research supporting or negating the benefit of collaborative consultation with students with TBI. The purpose of this study was to gather initial data on the use of collaborative consultation with students with TBI, determine its strengths and weaknesses, and examine the speech- language pathologist's professional training in the area of collaborative consultation. The study was a survey design. The survey was sent to 35 speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Eleven subjects completed and returned the survey. The results of the survey indicated that SLPs are using collaborative consultation with students with TBI. The subjects identified strengths of collaborative consultation with students with TBI. The weaknesses identified, were in regard to the collaborative consultation approach itself, not the use of collaborative consultation with the TBI population. The results indicated a lack of professional training in the area of collaborative consultation, especially at the college level. Future experimental research is necessary to determine the benefit of collaborative consultation with students with TBI.
