Abstract:
The purpose of the current study was to identify ways in which depression and anxiety, as well as components of depression and anxiety, uniquely relate to rates of alcohol consumption and risky sexual behavior among college students. It was hypothesized that levels of anxiety and depression, as well as components of anxiety and depression, would be significantly related to rates of alcohol use and risky sexual behavior. One hundred and four college students completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), the Multiscore Depression Inventory (MDI), and the Adult Manifest Anxiety Scale for College Students (AMAS-C) as well as questions regarding their sexual behaviors. Bivariate correlations and hierarchical regressions were used to examine the relations between the predictor and outcome variables. It was found that total scores and subscales of the MDI and AMAS-C were not significant predictors of levels of alcohol use or sexual behavior. Several components of depression and anxiety, however, were found to be related to levels of risk behavior. Additionally, differences in how components of negative affect related to risk behavior emerged between males and females. The current findings suggest that more research is needed to fully explore the relations between components of negative affect and risk behavior. In the mean time, education and prevention should continue to focus on external factors that have previously established relations with risk behavior.
