Abstract:
The present study examined the variables sports participation and amount of playing time during a game, teammate social support, coach social support, and athletic competence as related to the dependent variable, self-esteem, of 67 sixth and 43 seventh grade boys. Coach and teammate social support were evaluated by a modified version of Harter's Social Support Scale for Children. Subjects also completed Harter's Athletic Competence subscale and the global self-worth subscale of The Self-Perception Profile for Children. As predicted, a positive correlation was found between social support, both coach and teammate, and self-esteem. A significant relationship was also found between athletic competence and self-esteem, as predicted. A multiple regression analysis showed both teammate and coach social support, but not athletic competence, as significant predictors of self-esteem. Results of a one-way ANOVA failed to confirm the hypothesis that amount of playing time during a game was related to self-esteem. Possible explanations for the findings were discussed and recommendations for future research were examined.
