Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between personality characteristics and coping strategies used by patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP). Unlike other chronic pain populations, CP is a rare illness and little is known about how patients function and cope with the pain associated with the condition. One hundred twelve participants participated in the study. Participants provided demographic information, as well as information about frequency of pain episodes, use of medication, and use of alcohol. Personality characteristics were assessed by the Millon Behavioral Health Inventory (MBHI) and coping strategies were assessed by the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ). It was hypothesized that participants' personality characteristics as assessed by the MBHI would correlate with frequency of reported pain episodes and frequency of medication used. It was also hypothesized that participants would be more likely to use active coping strategies than passive strategies. Results indicated that there was a significant relationship between frequency of pain episodes reported and chronic tension. Additionally, greater frequency of pain episodes was associated with increased susceptibility to illness deterioration. Results of this study also found that participants used passive coping strategies more than active methods. Additional descriptive information and the implications are discussed as well as future directions for the research.
