Abstract:
The current crisis in marriage is a sign that people have problems in living up to their commitment. Evidence suggests that transpersonal commitments are different from other types, such as a commitment to an institution or a cause. Church teaching, in coming to terms with this reality, seeks more dialogue with the medical and behavioral sciences. Such a dialogue, however, has to overcome significant interface problems. To investigate this marriage crisis with an integrated approach, a self- report instrument, the Commitment to Partnership Scale (CPS) was developed to identify and measure those factors considered essential to marriage commitment. These essential factors were chosen following interviews with committed couples, conclusions from previous research studies, as well as following a particular philosophical model. The CPS was correlated with the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Test (LWMAT), the Measures of Psychosocial Development (MPD) and The Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI). Results indicate that the CPS is psychometrically sound, and enjoys good predictability for commitment to partnership. The CPS could be a useful tool in marriage preparation courses, Commitment to Partnership 3 marriage encounter groups, marriage counseling settings, as well as in marriage annulment cases.
