Abstract: The liturgical renewal movement has significantly impacted active participation in the American Catholic Church. This thesis asks how active participation within the liturgy has and should interact with the culture if it is the “source and summit” of the faith of Roman Catholics. Historical background on the liturgical renewal movement is provided, along with a summary of Sacrosanctum Concilium. An overview of three significant critiques from the works of Joseph Ratzinger, Catherine Pickstock, and Mark Searle are considered. Finally, suggestions on considering active participation's vertical and horizontal dimensions are made.
