Abstract:
The U.S. Surgeon General cited domestic violence as a major health problem in America. Using data collected from 204 volunteers residing in the Washington D.C. metro area, this study examined whether there is any association between psychological function (as measured by the METI) and domestic violence (as measured by the Gelles and Straus Conflict Tactics Scale). Three research and three exploratory hypotheses concerning psychological functions and abuse/abused status were tested by means of chi square test for independence. None of the hypotheses was sustained. One study conclusion is that a more specific form of sampling (i.e., a probability based sample stratified on abuser/abused status) would provide stronger data for a test of the study hypotheses, since it is the lack of reported abuse which contributed to low cell sizes in the analysis.
