Abstract:
This study explored the use of spiritual assessment, prayer, and spiritual/religious language by mental health practitioners. A random sample was drawn from national membership directories. Three groups were formed. Group I consisted of the American Counseling Association (ACA), the American Psychological Association Counseling Psychologists (APA-Div.17), and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Group II was sampled from the smaller subdivisions of the aforementioned clinical professional organizations that identify as being interested in religious and spiritual matters. Group II consisted of the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and, Religious Values and Issues in Counseling (ASERVIC), the American Psychological Association Psychology of Religion (APA/Div.36), and the National Association of Christian Social Workers (NACSW). Group III consisted of only the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC), which self-identifies as a group which regards counseling as a form of religious ministry. Data included a demographics questionnaire, The Use of Spiritual/Religious Interventions, and the Belief in Divine Intervention Scale. An ANOVA indicated a significant difference between the three groups in the use of all three interventions.
