Abstract: The purpose of this study was to establish whether differences exist in interpersonal distance preferences of employees as a result of occupying architecturally dissimilar workspaces. It was predicted that employees occupying closed workspaces who were subjected to personal space invasion during performance on a task which required concentration would suffer impaired task performance. The reasoning behind this prediction was the belief that these individuals have become accustomed to the architectural and psychological privacy that is a product of their work environment. It was also predicted that employees occupying open workspaces would not be affected under the condition of personal space invasion, meaning that their task performance scores would not differ significantly in the invasion and noninvasion conditions. Data was analyzed using a 2X2 mixed analysis of variance (MANOVA). The MANOVA revealed a significant interaction effect between the invasion and workspace variables. This interaction confirms the predicted hypothesis.
