Abstract:
Previous research among the general population has indicated that males tend to be more homophobic than females and that both males and females tend to show more personal anxiety regarding a homosexual person of their same gender. Previous research has also found that people who are firm in their religious beliefs and practices tend to have more negative attitudes toward homosexual persons in general than those who take religion less seriously or who have no religious beliefs. This research project was designed to answer the question: Do the results of previous research with the general population also hold true for the parents of a homosexual child? Do fathers have more negative attitudes toward a homosexual child than mothers? Do fathers and mothers have more negative attitudes toward a homosexual child of the same gender as the parent? Do the religious beliefs and practices of the parents make a difference in their attitudes toward a homosexual child? The subjects were 270 parents of homosexual daughters or sons. They responded to a demographic survey, a parental attitude questionnaire (PATCH), and a religiosity survey (SRS). Results indicated that within this sample, neither gender nor religiosity were factors that significantly influenced parental attitudes toward a homosexual child.
