Abstract:
In the realm of athletics, optimal performance is of paramount importance. Consequently, athletes go to great lengths to maximize performance. Although most athletes employ precompetition strategies aimed at improving performance, what if it were possible to improve performance by altering a variable during play, such as the color of an athlete's uniform, in order to alter mood, in turn altering performance? This study attempted to examine the effects of uniform color on the performance of professional ice hockey teams during the 2001-2002 National Hockey League season. It was hypothesized that color would influence various aspects of play related to the aggressiveness of the sport (i.e., penalties, face off win percentage, hits given), offense (i.e., shots attempted, successful shots, missed shots), and defense (i.e., blocked shots, save percentage). Results were compelling, suggesting that uniform color indeed influences most skills involved in professional ice hockey. The only skills that are seemingly not influenced by color appear to be those skills associated with the ability to score.
