Abstract:
This study examined locus of control, attendance, and success in treatment, as evidenced by lowered drug and alcohol use, in substance abusers. The sample, 26 women from AWARE Counseling Center, provided data by completing the following: 1) Personal Data Questionnaire, 2) Informed Consent, 3) Adult Nowicki-Strickland Internal External Locus of Control Scale, 4) Addiction Severity Index, and 5) Addiction Severity Index Follow-up. The findings of the current study failed to support the following hypotheses: 1) an internal shift in locus of control was related to attendance in treatment, 2) subjects' lowered drug and alcohol use was related to attendance in treatment, and 3) an internal shift in locus of control was related to success in treatment. Recommendations for future research are discussed.
