Abstract:
The author reviewed the literature on pathological gambling, describing course, growth, consequences, and epidemiology. The purpose of this study was to identify gender differences in rates of personality disorders and to delineate the roles of impulsiveness and trauma in 291 outpatients and inpatients who received treatment at private Midwestern and Western treatment centers. The author uncovered significant gender differences in rates of Obsessive-Compulsive and Borderline Personality Disorders. Trauma and impulsiveness predicted male severity. Predictors for female severity, like military experience and physical pain, were examined post-hoc. Chi-Square and multiple regression analyses with archival data were utilized. The author emphasized implications for pathological gambling treatment design and effectiveness for the female gambler.
