Abstract:
Will formal, One-on-One mentoring contribute to the Recruitment and Formation Program of the Marist Brothers? Studies presented by Levinson, Fowler and Parks indicate that mentoring would be a significant contribution to this formative program. The Subjects of this study were members of the Marist Brothers Contact Program, a college-aged initial recruitment program for the congregation. The total membership was invited to participate and was randomly divided into two groups (mentored, non-mentored). The population of each group was 30. It was hypothesized that those who engaged in a formal mentoring program would have ahigher rate of interest in pursuing a vocation to the Marist Brothers. It was further hypothesized that those mentored would express a higher rate of interest in pursuing other areas of interest or options of "religious" service. The instruments, designed by the researcher, used for the study consisted of a self-reported Survey and a Structured Interview. Both were administered in the Fall of 1992 and again in the Fall of 1993. As hypothesized, the mentored group reflected a greater level of interest then those not mentored. The mentored group also reflected a greater interest in other church ministries. It is recommended that further, long-term study and research be considered to validate the conclusions of this initial, short-term experiment.
