Abstract:
The role of the pastoral counselor as it has evolved in hospice programs throughout the United States was investigated. Hospice programs were selected from the 1987 Guide to the Nation's Hospices . Of the 389 hospices surveyed, 192 were identified as church- affiliated and 197 of the systematic random sampling were nonchurch-affiliated. The Hospice Pastoral Counselor Survey questionnaire was sent to these hospice programs. Data were collected on demographic and institutional characteristics, spiritual care programs, roles, functions, team relationships, and evaluation processes of the pastoral counselors. Roles and functions of the pastoral counselors were compared with age, size, affiliation, and region. Results showed differences in role, functions, qualifications and employment by affiliation and region. The study also concluded that role blurring is apparent in hospice. This phenomenon may be the result of cost containment and/or the nature of the interdisciplinary team. Therefore further research is needed to determine the cause(s) of role blurring.
