Abstract:
Twelve Spanish-speaking school-aged children participated in an eight week pretest/posttest group design investigation targeting improvement of their communicative competence through a narrative intervention program. The investigation also examined the efficacy of providing an intervention in the children's native language. The intervention conducted on the control group was in English. The experimental group received the intervention in their native language of Spanish. The groups received identical instruction and materials. Narrative samples, obtained from the pre/post testing, examined communication units (CUs), clauses, number of words, story grammar, and narrative style. The findings from this study revealed that the use of a narrative intervention might improve communicative competence of children, with intervention instructed in their native language possibly yielding even greater success.
